White House backs away from IVF coverage mandate despite Trump’s campaign pledge, Washington Post reports

The White House has no current plans to mandate insurance coverage for in vitro fertilization, despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s campaign promise to expand access to fertility treatments, The Washington Post reported on Saturday. President Trump signed an executive order earlier this year directing the government to expand access to IVF and reduce the costs of the popular fertility treatment. White House officials say expanding IVF access remains a priority, but legal constraints prevent mandating coverage without Congressional approval, and no bill is currently planned, the report added.

US health agency to wind down mRNA vaccine development

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said on Tuesday it would wind down mRNA vaccine development activities under its biomedical research unit. The unit, Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, helps companies develop medical supplies to address public health threats, and had provided billions of dollars for development of vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic. HHS said the wind down includes cancellation of a contract awarded to Moderna (MRNA.O), opens new tab for the late-stage development of its bird flu vaccine for humans and the right to purchase the shots, as previously reported in May. The U.S. health agency said it was also rejecting or canceling multiple pre-award solicitations, including proposals from Pfizer (PFE.N), opens new tab, Sanofi Pasteur (SASY.PA), opens new tab, CSL Seqirus (CSL.AX), opens new tab, Gritstone and others. This is the latest development under U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a long-time vaccine skeptic who has been making sweeping changes to reshape vaccines, food and medicine policies. Kennedy said the HHS is terminating these programs because data show these vaccines "fail to protect effectively against upper respiratory infections like COVID and flu," but did not offer scientific evidence. "We're shifting that funding toward safer, broader vaccine platforms that remain...

Former X CEO Yaccarino takes helm at digital health company eMed

Weight-loss focused digital company eMed Population Health on Tuesday named Linda Yaccarino, the former chief of Elon Musk's social media platform X, as CEO. The online weight management company's digital platform provides at-home diagnostics, proctor-led screenings and physician-guided prescribing for patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes. Yaccarino has virtually no experience in the health sector but brings more than a decade of advertising expertise. She led the modernization of NBCUniversal's ad business and built major brand partnerships at the Comcast-owned company. In her first public statement following her appointment, Yaccarino said, "There is an opportunity to combine technology, lifestyle, and data in a new powerful way through the digital channels that impact consumers directly in ways that have never been done before." At X, where she spent two years, Yaccarino was tasked with revitalizing the company's reputation among marketers who had fled the platform after its takeover by Musk. She stepped down from her role at the social media site in July, in a surprise move just months after the platform was acquired by the billionaire's AI startup, xAI. She did not give a reason for her departure from X, but analysts noted her task was a difficult one given Musk's reputation and the...

Gates Foundation Commits $2.5 Billion for Women’s Health

The Gates Foundation will spend $2.5 billion over the next five years on projects related to women’s health, just as the US government pulls back on science research and international development. Bill Gates, chair of the foundation and co-founder of Microsoft Corp., also told Bloomberg in an interview that he recently spoke with President Donald Trump about the foundation’s years-long work with the National Institutes of Health on a gene-based cure for HIV. Trump was curious about the project, but Gates told him that the current level of backing was unknown. “I said, ‘No, it’s still up in the air how much US government support we’ll get for that,’” Gates said he told the president. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Gates Foundation announcement provides the most detail yet on one area where the foundation plans to use its remaining funds before it shuts down in 2045. This tranche of money will focus on women’s health, targeting critical areas that particularly hit women in low- and middle-income countries. “Women’s health continues to be ignored, underfunded, and sidelined,” Gates said in a statement earlier Monday. “Too many women still die from preventable causes or live in poor health....

Trump administration blocks funding for CDC health programs, WSJ reports

U.S. President Donald Trump's administration is blocking funding for a swath of public-health programs run by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing unnamed sources. These include youth violence prevention programs, research on preventing gun injuries and deaths and efforts targeting diabetes, chronic kidney disease and tobacco use, according to the report. The money withheld could not be determined, but it could be as high as $200 million, the WSJ reported, citing a person familiar with the matter. The CDC did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. The White House has previously stated its intention to reduce U.S. health spending by more than a quarter next year, with the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention facing the brunt of billions of dollars in cuts. Earlier this week, Susan Monarez was confirmed as CDC director to lead a downsized agency as the White House moves to slash its budget by nearly $3.6 billion, reducing it to about $4 billion. The cuts follow a layoff plan enacted by U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. that eliminated 2,400 positions in CDC, though roughly 700 of those workers have since been...

Trump’s EPA targets key health ruling underpinning all US greenhouse gas rules

The Trump administration said on Tuesday it will rescind the long-standing finding that greenhouse gas emissions endanger human health, removing the legal foundation for all U.S. greenhouse gas regulations. If finalized, the repeal would end current limits on greenhouse gas pollution from vehicle tailpipes, power plants, smokestacks and other sources, and hamper future U.S. efforts to combat global warming. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin announced the agency's plan to rescind the "endangerment finding" at an event at a car dealership in Indiana, alongside Energy Secretary Chris Wright, and called it the largest deregulatory action in U.S. history. The proposal, which needs to undergo a public comment period, would cut $54 billion in costs annually through the repeal of all greenhouse gas standards, including the vehicle tailpipe standard, he said. Under President Joe Biden, the EPA said the tailpipe rules through 2032 would avoid more than 7 billion tons of carbon emissions as it prodded automakers to build more EVs and provide nearly $100 billion of annual net benefits to society including $62 billion in reduced fuel costs, and maintenance and repair costs for drivers. Environmental groups blasted the move, saying it spells the end of the road for U.S. action against climate change,...
