World Health Organization says US CDC needs to be protected

The World Health Organization on Sunday called for the "protection of public health excellence" at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "No institution is perfect and continued improvements are always needed to make sure the latest science and evidence is applied to emerging challenges in real time, but the work of the US CDC has been invaluable and must be protected," WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a post on X. His comments come amid leadership changes at the CDC and concerns that decisions by U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. are putting Americans' health at risk. Ghebreyesus did not echo those concerns or calls by some for Kennedy to resign. He instead pointed to how the CDC's reputation as a "center of excellence" has inspired other countries to adopt its best practices. Ghebreyesus said the WHO's longtime relationship with the CDC has ensured that people in the United States and around the world benefited from the best U.S. science "while at the same time providing the U.S. with access to global health data, alerts, experience and guidance from other countries." The Trump administration has been critical of the WHO for its handling of COVID-19, with Kennedy dismissing the...

India looking beyond US for pharma exports amid tariff tensions

India is seeking to boost drug exports to semi-regulated markets in Africa, Latin America and Southeast Asia to reduce its dependence on the U.S., where tariff concerns pose risks, officials from a government-backed trade body told Reuters on Thursday. The Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India (Pharmexcil) also plans to push for sales of finished goods to China to bridge the trade deficit, the officials said. The Indian industry imports more than 60% of its raw materials and active pharmaceutical ingredients from China. Get the latest news from India and how it matters to the world with the Reuters India File newsletter. Sign up here. While Indian pharmaceutical exports are currently exempt from President Donald Trump's tariffs of up to 50%, growing uncertainty and tensions between the countries have kept the industry cautious. "It is a matter of concern for us," Pharmexcil Chairman Namit Joshi said, referring to the U.S. tariffs. The U.S. is India's largest market and accounts for slightly more than a third of India's pharmaceutical exports, which comprise mainly cheaper generic versions of popular drugs. Exports to the country rose 20% to about $10.5 billion in fiscal 2025. "The point is how medium and small enterprises and big companies can come together and work on those...

US senators pit Kennedy against Trump on vaccine policy

Democrats and Republicans pushed U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on his recent vaccine policies and their stark contrast to President Donald Trump's successful first-term pandemic initiative to speed vaccine development during a combative Senate hearing on Thursday. Half a dozen heated exchanges focused on the details of Kennedy's decision to fire Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Susan Monarez, who had started the job with Kennedy's support only a month earlier. Keep up with the latest medical breakthroughs and healthcare trends with the Reuters Health Rounds newsletter. Sign up here. Trump, speaking at the White House after the hearing, expressed support for Kennedy, saying he has some "different ideas." Republican Senator Bill Cassidy, a physician who played a critical role in Kennedy's confirmation, grilled him about the cancellation of $500 million in COVID vaccine contracts, while citing examples of doctors and cancer patients who have been unable to obtain the protection against the potentially deadly disease. "I would say, effectively, we're denying people vaccines," concluded Cassidy. "Well, you're wrong," Kennedy responded. Cassidy, of Louisiana, praised Trump for having accelerated the development, manufacturing, and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines in 2020. His line of questioning - mirrored by two other members of his and Trump's party - underscored the tightrope Republicans critical...

Trump administration’s COVID vaccine limits

New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed an executive order on Friday authorizing pharmacists in the state to administer COVID-19 vaccinations to anyone who wants a shot, becoming the latest Democratic governor to try to countermand the Trump administration’s new limits on inoculations. The order, which Hochul signed during a visit to an elementary school, is effective for 30 days, though the governor said she would extend it as needed until the state legislature meets in January and can consider a more permanent fix. “If you want your child to have a COVID shot, it should be available to you and covered by insurance,” she said. “Extreme times call for extreme measures.” Under the leadership of U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a vaccine skeptic, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved new versions of the COVID vaccine only for Americans over 65 or those with certain underlying medical conditions. In past years, the shots have generally been available to anyone. A spokesperson for CVS Health (CVS.N), opens new tab, which owns one of the largest pharmacy chains in the country, said it would "ensure COVID-19 vaccinations are available as soon as possible at all New York CVS Pharmacy locations" in accordance...
