Exposure to Nature May Reduce Brain’s Pain Response, Study Finds

According to a study conducted by researchers at the University of Exeter and the University of Vienna, exposure to nature may alter the way the brain processes pain.

In this study, brain scans of 49 participants, who received mild electric shocks, revealed that pain-related brain activity decreased when the individuals watched videos of natural landscapes, compared to when they were shown urban scenes or indoor office environments.

Researchers noted that although the pain-relief effect of nature is about half as strong as traditional painkillers, these findings could offer alternative approaches to pain management.
