Amid the fast-moving rollout of the Wegovy pill, Novo Nordisk has taken to advertising\u2019s biggest stage to help get the word out.
\nAfter a week\u2019s worth of social media teasers, Novo on Friday unveiled a commercial that\u2019ll make its broadcast debut during Super Bowl LX on Feb. 8, marking the Danish pharma\u2019s first-ever Super Bowl ad.
\nThe 90-second spot features an array of celebrities\u2014\u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d stars Kenan Thompson and Ana Gasteyer, musician DJ Khaled and actors Danielle Brooks, Danny Trejo and John C. Reilly\u2014all chosen for their \u201cability to connect\u201d with audiences and their \u201cunique and distinct styles of communication,\u201d as Ed Cinca, Novo\u2019s senior VP of marketing and patient solutions, told Fierce Pharma Marketing in an interview.
\nThe commercial starts with Thompson and Khaled sharing the \u201cbig news\u201d that Wegovy is now available in pill form, after which Thompson suggests to viewers that \u201cif there was a pill that made other helpful things possible, you\u2019d take it.\u201d
\nA montage ensues, showing the stars wishing for pills that could improve their parallel parking skills, turn them into pro wrestlers, help them rescue more kittens and, as Gasteyer requests, make others \u201cstop being so judgy about how to lose weight.\u201d
\nThat last sentiment may be particularly relatable to the ad\u2019s target audience, per Cinca, who called it his \u201cfavorite part\u201d of the spot.
\n\u201cThat, I think, really hits a chord with so many folks who are experiencing this weight loss journey,\u201d the executive said. \u201cIt\u2019s already so difficult to lose weight, it\u2019s nearly impossible to keep it off, [your] body\u2019s fighting against you\u2014and then, all the while, the judgments that come from family and friends as part of it.\u201d
\n\u201cI hope that through this fun, irreverent tone, we can also have a serious dialogue and people can start engendering the right conversations around weight loss,\u201d he added.
\nAfter the requisite readout of the drug\u2019s risks and side effects, the ad ends by directing viewers to visit the Wegovy website and talk to their doctors about the pill, alongside text noting that a monthly supply of the med costs $25 for the commercially insured and\u2014under a limited-time offer\u2014$149 for self-paying patients.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
